How to Green Your Business

There are a number of simple and inexpensive things business owners can do to make your company green and sustainable AND cut costs. Conservation is the theme running through all these things.

To begin, recycle. If recycling is not available in your area, check out StopWaste.org, which, though located in the San Francisco Bay Area has tremendous resources — all for free.

Replace incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient compact fluorescents. Be sure to purchase a good product: Like everything else there are good and not-so-good green goods.

When you aren’t using electrical devices that don’t need to be on all the time, turn them off.

Find ways to reduce your use of water. A water restrictor on your faucet is cheap and can reduce water usage dramatically.

Low flush toilets save water AND money that otherwise would go down, ah, the toilet. Or if you prefer get a hot water bottle, fill it up and put it in the water tank. Be sure that there’s enough water for the john to flush properly. You won’t save water if you have to flush twice.

Use paper that is recycled or at least 30% recycled content. And conserve paper. If you don’t need to print something, don’t!

Avoid pesticides, herbicides, and other hazardous chemicals.

If you don’t need to drive, don’t. Take the bus, ride a bike, or walk. If you must drive, be sure that your tires are properly inflated, your car is well tuned and your air filter clean.

If you can afford one and your current car is in disrepair, purchase a hybrid. Remember that a hybrid still burns gas and that owning one does’t give you a license to drive unneccessary errands. If you must drive, combine errands and consider carpooling. Carpooling can save you time and money AND increase you business networking time.
